One of the things I enjoy most about the Australian sense of humor is the ability to laugh at ourselves as we acknowledge and at the same time, make light of the awkwardness of our own situations.
Here are just a few lines from the new Australian film “Mental” which fully reflect some of the best aspects of the Aussie sense of humor.
“America, Europe, Asia….. And all the way down here is Australia.
Alone.
Isolated.
Every wonder why?
Why we’re down here?
Well…… we were a penal colony.
Well, that’s the cover story, yeah, but historically where have they always sent the loonies?
As far away as possible.
Well you can’t get any farther away than Australia.
We weren’t a penal colony we were a lunatic asylum.
Our ancestors were loony and this is the result.
I mean have a look around.
There’s no such thing as normal there’s just different shades of mental.
If you’re totally mental you’re in the lunatic asylum.
The rest of them, the delusional’s, the borderline’s, the compulsives, the paranoids, the schizoid’s, make up Australia as we know it.
We’re nothing but a living experiment in madness under constant observation by the psychiatric community of the world.
But what about Kylie Minogue? She got out.
Ah yes, but she was a control mouse.”
P.S. Please note neither the topic or the colloquialisms applied are intended to be inflammatory towards anyone.

You don’t have to be crazy to live here, but it helps.
Indeed it does Edgeledge….. Indeed it does
