This has made me curious about myself.... I exhibit the same characteristics in the social arena, and have very little friends outside my points of interests.... I also tend to shift topics at an alarming rate when in conversations that makes it often difficult for people to pick up on.... my humor can be described as odd at best, finding no humor in the popular comedies today.... so I wonder.... thanks for posting :)

Ah, I'm also over 40 and wonder if my strangeness has less to do with my confidence and more to do with AS....

I'm so sorry you and your daughter experienced such pain and unfairness. Although I don't have a diagnosis your daughter's situation echos mine at her age. I tried to commit suicide at 18 and simply got labeled with a personality disorder. Psychiatrists and other mental health professionals are largely ignorant when it comes to the manifestation of AS in females. It presents differently in females than males many times so it goes undetected. I wonder how many girls and women are being told they have mental illnesses instead of a social communications disorder? Wouldn't it be beneficial for the mental health professionals to put a bit of the research money into AS in the female population? It costs an 'arm and a leg' to get a psychologist to diagnose Asperger's here in Canada. You can get an unofficial diagnosis from a psychiatrist covered by public health care but the diagnosis won't get you the same kind of services (as the one from a psychologist would).
